India’s luxury hotel industry depends largely on foreign tourist arrivals further classified into business travelers (around 65% of the total foreign tourists) and leisure travelers. The total arrival reached 4.4 million in 2006.
Medical Tourism
According a report published by RNCOS in 2009, medical tourism in India has emerged as the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry despite the global economic downturn. High cost of treatments in the developed countries such as the USA and UK has forced patients from such regions to look for alternative and cost-effective destinations to get their treatments. The Indian medical tourism industry is presently at a nascent stage, but it has an enormous potential for future growth.
India's share in the global medical tourism industry will climb to around 2.4 percent by the end of 2012. Moreover, medical tourism is expected to generate revenue of US$ 2.4 billion by 2012, growing over 27 percent during 2009–2012. The number of medical tourists is anticipated to grow over 19 percent in the forecast period to reach 1.1 million by 2012.
