With the third largest market in the world, India’s telecommunications industry is on a fast track for growth and development, slated to become the second largest telecom market in the world by 2010. At present, India has 464.82 million phone connections, putting it at third place in the global market and second in terms of wireless connections.
Business Monitor International said that India is currently adding 8-10 million mobile subscribers per month and that by the middle of 2012 approximately half the country’s population will own mobile phones, which translate to about 612 million mobile subscribers. Revenues generated from this industry’s growth are projected at 43 billion US dollars for the year 2009-2010.
Aside from phone and mobile subscriptions, India’s telecom industry is set to see growth in the area of mobile phone manufacturing as well, projected to become the second largest in the world by 2010. It is estimated to grow at a clip of 28.3 percent CAGR between the years 2006-2011, producing 107 million handsets by the year 2010.
This astounding feat of telecommunications sector growth has attracted interest from foreign telecom companies to sink investment in the country and prompted action from the government to ensure that telecom needs are being met both on the consumer and provider ends of the industry. The government has so far taken initiative and other proactive measures to better facilitate the growth of this vital industry in the Indian economy.
Some of these measures include allowing 100% Foreign Direct Investment in telecom equipment manufacturing and allowing foreign companies to bid for 3G spectrum without having to find an Indian company to partner up with. With these and other measures set in place, India is truly on its way to unprecedented growth and success in the telecom industry in the years ahead.
