Indian silk export earnings have grown steadily over the period 2002-07 at a rate of nearly 12 percent. Natural silk yarn, fabrics and made-ups form the largest segment of silk exports and are expected to generate approximately 53 percent of the export earnings from silk in 2008-09, while readymade garments are expected at 45 percent of the export.

India is the first country in the world to produce natural color silk yarn. This unique product line is expected to create more opportunities in global silk markets. Some of the factors responsible for the success of the Indian silk industry include its large production capacity and the availability of skilled labor.
