India is not a major exporter of semiconductor, and semiconductor manufacturing is still limited to three government companies which are Bharat Electronics Ltd, Society for Integrated Circuit Technology and Applied Research, and Semi-Conductor Laboratory. However, after the Indian government introduced the Special Incentive Package Scheme in 2007, numbers of multinational semiconductor companies decided to establish their chip design centers in India. Chip manufacturing by private entities is expected to begin in the near future.
The semiconductor industry is forecasted to grow twelvefold in the period of 2005-2015. Furthermore, India's consumption of electronics equipment in 2015 is expected to rise to 11 percent of total global consumption, jumping from 1.8 percent in 2005.
The growing demand for IT hardware, office automation products, and consumer electronics such as mobile phones, telecommunications products, and automotive components are driving the demand for semiconductors in India. Furthermore, the growth in solar energy, renewable energy, and automated healthcare services sectors is beginning to boost demand for semiconductor products. These provide an opportunity for foreign companies to enter the Indian market.
