Indian plastics industry operates more than 30,000 processing units, which 85 – 90 percent of them are small and medium enterprises (SMEs)

The industry has grown steadily both in domestic consumption and exports. Domestic consumption is expected to double to reach 12.5 million tons by the end of 2010. Furthermore, polymer consumption, which was 5 million tons in 2008, is expected to reach 12 million tons by 2012. In 2007- 2008, exports of Indian plastics were $3.8 billion, which were 10 percent growth over the previous year. This number grew by 25 percent compared with the number of plastic exports in the period of 2004-2005. The U.S. was the largest plastic exports destination from India with the value of $310.5 million, followed by China and U.K.

Indian plastic industry has excellent potential in terms of capacity, infrastructure, and availability of skilled labor. Furthermore, the raw materials used for plastics manufacturing such as PP, HDPE, low-density polyethylene, and PVC are produced locally. This reduces dependency of plastic processors on imports of raw materials.
