The Indian electronics industry constitutes less than 1% of the global electronics industry. However investments in manufacturing capacity and capabilities in this sector have increased rapidly in the last few years due to strong growth in local demand and is estimated to be of the order of $35b in the year 2010.
India is also an exporter of a vast range of electronics components in many segments of the industry including Display technologies, Entertainment electronics, Optical Storage devices, passive components, electromechanical components, Telecom equipment and Transmission & Signaling equipment.
India has a large base of manufacturing capability in display technologies and progressed from conventional monochrom picture tubes to flat color display tubes and plasma displays. In the optical storage device segment an Indian company is the world’s third largest manufacturer of CDs and DVSs and supplies to a number of major branded players including Sony, Verbatim, TDK and Maxell. India also has several world class companies manufacturing electromechanical and wound components. There are over 160 ISO 9001 and over 50 UL certified companies manufacturing electronic components and subsystems.
