The Indian Chemical Industry is one of India’s most established sectors  and contributes over 7% of its GDP. It is ranked 12th largest in the world, and has been growing at more than 10% yearly. The industry covers a large spectrum of categories including inorganic and organic chemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals, plastics and petrochemicals, dyes and pigments, fine and specialty chemicals, pesticides and agrochemicals and fertilizers.

The liberalization of India’s economy since 1991 has led to a sea-change in the size, competitiveness, scope and vision of the players in the Indian chemical industry. Prior to 1991 chemical manufacturing was largely controlled by licensing regulations and the industry enjoyed protection in the form of differential import duties on raw materials and finished chemical products. It has matured from manufacturing basic chemicals in a closed economy to a diversified industry making products in the basic, specialty and knowledge segments of the market.

India now manufactures basic chemicals in the constituent industries of petrochemicals, inorganic chemicals, fertilizers and other industrial chemicals. In the specialty category, Indian industry has capabilities in adhesive sealants, catalysts, plastic additives and industrial gases. India also has significant strengths in the knowledge category comprising agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

The top categories of imports from India into the United States include:
• Pharmaceuticals & Medicines
• Synthetic Dyes & Pigments
• Printing Inks
• Basic Inorganic Chemicals
