The Indian automotive industry is among the fastest growing segments of the Indian economy and has recorded impressive growth in production, sales and exports of both automobiles and automotive components. In terms of volume it is the second largest two-wheeler market in the world, the largest three-wheeler market in the world and the fifth largest commercial vehicle market in the world.
The Indian automotive industry produces a wide range of vehicles such as Light Passenger Vehicles (passenger Cars, and SUV's) Commercial Vehicles (LCV, MCV, HCV and buses), Tractors including farm tractors, earthmoving and construction vehicles, two wheelers (motorcycles, scooters and mopeds) and three wheelers.
The output of the automotive component industry was $22billion in 2009 and exports were approximately $3.8billion, This included 1.8 million vehicles of which 446.000 were passenger vehicles.
Principal exported automotive parts include piston rings, gaskets, engine valves, fuel pump nozzles, fuel injection parts, filter & filter elements, radiators, gears, leaf springs, brake assemblies & bearings, clutch facings, head lamps, auto bulbs & halogen bulbs, spark plugs and body parts.
