Each state in India boasts of its own remarkable style of leather art. For example, Kashmir is famous for its decorative use of colored leather pieces. Karnataka’s leather work is distinguished by its use of metallic gold and silver touches painted with figures.
India today meets 10 percent of the global demand for leather. The footwear industry, which is a major segment of this industry, posted a growth rate of 17 percent during the years of 2003-2008. In 2007-08, the leather industry had growth rates of 4 percent and 12 percent in terms of production and exports respectively. By 2013-14, exports of leather and leather products are estimated to reach $7 billion.
