- Term: rasbhariThe plant and its fruit, Physalis peruviana, not to be confused with the western raspberry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raspberry) or the Indian Gooseberry (Amla). This plant is of Latin American orgin and the fruit is a smooth round berry, resembling a miniature (1 inch),yellow or orange tomato. Removed from its bladder-like calyx, it is about the size of a marble, about 1–2 cm in diameter. Like a tomato, it contains numerous small seeds. It is sweet when ripe, with a characteristic, mildly tart flavor A prominent feature of the fruit is the inflated, papery "calyx" enclosing each berry, similar to one found on a tomatillo. Sold in Indian markets, the calyx is often peeled but to expose the fruit, but left attached to the berry. In the United States, it is sometimes marketed as a Pitchuberry, see http://www.pichuberry.comAll Dictionary Terms
