Handloom production is the second largest employment provider for the rural population in India after agriculture. The sector accounts for 13 percent of the total cloth produced in the country. In 2007-08, the total handloom cloth produced in India posted a growth rate of 6 percent. The export of handloom products increased by 4.8 percent in 2006-07. The US, the UK, Germany, and Japan are the major importers of Indian handloom products.
