India is the third-largest producer of chemicals in Asia, after China and Japan. The Indian chemicals industry accounts for about 18 percent of the country’s total manufacturing output and accounts for about 3 percent of India’s GDP.

In 2007-2008, total exports of dyes and dye intermediates, organic and inorganic chemicals (including agro-chemicals, cosmetics and toiletries, essential oils, incense sticks and castor oil) were about $6.5 billion. In 2007-08 alone, exports of inorganic and organic chemicals to the U.S. grew by approximately 41 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
