Holbrooke was nominated by President Clinton to be Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs, and he was confirmed by the Senate on August 25,1994.
His most recent position, prior to becoming Assistant Secretary of State, was as U.S. Ambassador to Germany. He has been a part of the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administration. Obama gave him the title of ambassador to Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Obama administration wanted to have Holbrooke as a negotiator with India as well, but India did not want to be a part of the "AfPak" region, denying the US access to involvement with the Kashmir border between India and Pakistan. As a result, Holbrooke is not bery popular in India.
