With a population of over 1 million, Vadodara, formerly known as Baroda, is the third most-populated city in the state of Gujarat. Vadodara sits on the banks of the River Vishwamitri which divides Vadodara into eastern and western divisions. The eastern side tends to be more traditional whereas the western side is more modern in architecture and content. The city has a tropical climate, hot summers, dry winters, and humid monsoon seasons.

Until the early 1960s Vadodara was considered to be a cultural and educational center. The first modern factory was established in Vadodara in 1907. The leading industries were chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cotton textiles and machine tools. In 1962, Vadodara witnessed a spurt in industrial activity because of the Gujarat Refinery and Indian Oil Corporation Limited. Several factors like raw material, product demand, human resources, financial and material resources have contributed to Baroda becoming one of India’s foremost industrial centers.

Business

In Vadodara various major industries such as Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals, Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (now owned by Reliance Industries Limited) and Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited, have sprouted near the Gujarat Refinery. They depend on the refinery for fuel and feedstock. Other major public sector units are Heavy Water Project, Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. Additionally, other major enterprises have come up in the private sector such as Bombardier Transportation, a Canadian company. Baroda also has quite a few manufacturing units such as the General Motors, Philips, Panasonic, Sterling Biotech, and Sun Pharmaceuticals.

Transportation

Home to the Vadodara Airport, Vadodara is known as a Gateway to the Golden Quadrilateral because the city is on the major rail and road arteries joining Mumbai with Delhi and Mumbai with Ahmedabad.
