Sikkim is a state in India with a population of 540,851 people and is a total area of 2,739 square miles. The capital of Sikkim is Gangtok.  Sikkim’s only neighboring state is West Bengal. Sikkim shares its borders with the countries of China, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Economy

Agriculture is the main part of Sikkim’s economy.  Maize, rice, ginger, wheat, potato, large cardamom, and orange are important crops that are grown. Sikkim has been declared an industrially backward state, but there are numerous cottage industries in the country. Those industries consist of weaving, woodwork, bamboo craft, carpet making, and metalwork. Minerals mined in Sikkim are copper, dolomite, talc, graphite, quartzite, coal, zinc and lead. A new industry the state has recently invested in is gambling. The Casino Sikkim was recently opened by the state government.

Transportation

There is a total of 1,480 miles of road in Sikkim. Sikkim currently does not have an airport, but there are plans to make one in the year 2011.

Tourism

Some of the major festivals that occur in Sikkim are Maghey Sankranti, Durga Puja, Tyohar, Losar (the Tibetan New Year), and Tendong Lho Rum Faat (Worship of Mt. Tendong). Places to visit are the Ruins of Rabdentse, Yuksom, Fambong La Wildlife Sanctuary, Borong TsaChu hot springs, and Rhododendron Sanctuary.
