Maharashtra, the third largest state in India in terms of land area is also the richest state. The state contributed about 14% to the country’s GDP in the year 2005-06. Known for its capital and the largest city in India – Mumbai, Maharashtra is also home to other large cities such as Pune, about 120 miles southeast, and Nagpur, in the center of India. Bordering the Arabian Sea, Maharashtra has the largest sea port in India at Mumbai.
Marathi is the language spoken in Maharashtra. Hindi is also commonly spoken and in the major cities; English is used as the business language. The coastal regions of Maharashtra enjoy tropical climate. This state has popular hill resorts such as Lonavala, Mahabeleshwar, and Amboli
Maharashtra has the largest network of roads in India and it is also well connected by Indian Railways. The western parts of the state (including Mumbai and Pune) are more developed in terms of infrastructure and facilities.
Maharashtra has many well developed industries including engineering, chemical and allied products, petroleum, automotive and ancillary manufacturing. Many of the Indian and Multinational corporations are headquartered in Mumbai; therefore, the city is known as the commercial and financial capital of India. Global car giants such as Mercedes and Fiat have their factories based in Pune and so does Tata Motors. The shipbuilding industry is also very active in the state. A $2.2 billion project is being developed in Nagpur which will include an international cargo hub, airport and a special economic zone for IT companies.
