Jammu and Kashmir is 86,000 square miles with a population of just 10 million according to the 2001 census. It has two capitals; Srinagar is the capital during the summer and Jammu is the capital during the winter. This state can be divided into three distinct regions; Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.  Jammu and Kashmir is surrounded by the states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, and by the countries of Pakistan and China.

Economy

Handicrafts is a major Industry in Jammu and Kashmir. There is everything from Paper machie, carpets, shawl making, embroidery, and wood carving. Other industries that can be found in this state is Plastic production, other sports equipment factories,  chemical and electronic industries. 80% of the state’s population depends on agriculture. While paddy, wheat, and maize are major crops, millet, apples, barley, cherries, pears, corn, oranges, saffron, rice, peaches, and sorghum are grown as well.

Tourism

Tourism also makes a part of the state’s economy, because of the holy shrines in Jammu, the Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh , and the holy shrines of Vaishno Devi and Amarnath are popular tourist and pilgrimage sites.  Gulmarg  the location of one of the most popular ski resort is a popular tourist area.

Climate

The climate of Jammu and Kashmir varies greatly. In Jammu it tends to be hot and tropical, but in Ladakh it is very cold, and in the mountainous areas of Kashmir and Jammu have temperate conditions.
