Guwahati is a major city in eastern India, with a population of 818,809 in 2001. The city is situated between the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River and the foothills of the Shillong plateau.

Business

As a river port, Guwahati has traditionally been an important administrative and trading center. The major economic activities are trade and commerce, transportation and services. It is a major wholesale distribution center, a marketing and retail hub of the region. Manufacturing is also an important industry. The most important manufacturing industry in the city is the petroleum refinery of IOCL at Noonmati. The city contains the headquarters and regional offices of several manufacturing and business companies, such as the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL). Guwahati is also important for printing and publishing, and businesses related to electronic and print media.

Transportation

Guwahati’s airport is about 20 km west of the city center; it is called the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Borjhar. Guwahati Junction, the major station of Guwahati, is the headquarters of the Northeast Frontier Railway zone. However, the train lacks a direct route to many cities in central and west India. The national road system connects Guwahati to many of the major cities in India.
