The state of Gujarat is located in the western portion of India. Its capital city is Gandhinagar and its largest metropolis is Ahmedabad. Throughout history, Gujarat has played a vital role in the industrialization and economic vitality of India.
Features
Gujarat is considered as one of the primary centers of trade and commerce in the country. Its population is over 51 million. Its primary language is Gujarati, and 89% of the population is Hindu. Its major cities are Ahmedabad, Surat, Baroda, and Rajkot. The city with the fastest growth is Surat followed closely by Ahmedabad in third place.
Business
Gujarat has the largest business in India and contributes a large portion of the total goods production to the country. Its GDP is well above the national average. 39% of India’s industrial output comes from Gujarat while 80% of its salt production and 67% of its petrochemical production are generated here. It also produces 20% of all exports and 25% of all textiles.
Some productive agricultural goods produced in Gujarat are peanuts, cotton, milk, sugar cage and dates. In addition, more than 20% of the S&P CNX 500 companies have facilities in this state.
Gujarat also has several natural resources that are being successfully exploited. These include gypsum, bauxite, feldspar, and limestone. Approximately 90% of the Soda Ash produced in India comes from Gujarat. There are over 1,670 kilometers of shoreline in which largest ship-recycling yard in the world is located. Other important cargo and passenger ports are Kandla Port and Port of Magdalla as well as the privately owned Mundra Port.
Education
Gujarat has 17 universities. There are 2 centers for space and satellite education and research. There are also institutes for physical research and chemical research as well as scientific and industrial study. The Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute is currently focused on reverse osmosis, marine chemicals, marine biotechnology, and electro membrane process. There are several schools of business management offering MBAs as well as a school of design and a school of rural management. There are over 20 National Institutes of Technology scattered throughout Gujarat focusing on computer science and engineering.
Gujarat, while being a very progressive state in India, is still working to move forward. A new international airport is currently being completed while highways, railways and other forms of commuter transport are being enhanced.
