Assam is a 30,000 square miles state with a population of 27 million people. Dispur is the capital of Assam.  Assam is bordered by the states of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, West Bengal, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Bordering countries are Bangladesh an Bhutan.

Economy

Agriculture is an important part of Assam’s economy. Their main crop is rice. However, a variety of other crops are grown as well, such as, jute, cotton, oilseeds, sugarcane ,potatoes, oranges, banana, arecanut, jackfruit, etc. The major industries in Assam are tea and the oil & gas industry. Other industries in Assam are silk, petrochemical, cement, yarn, handicrafts, fertilizer, ect.  In 2008, there were 4 oil refineries in the state.

Tourism

Places to visit in Assam are the Kasiranga National Park, which is famous for the one horned rhinoceros; the Manas Tiger Project; Mandan Kamdev temple; Tezpur, for the Bhairavi Temple. There are many festivals that occur in Assam. Some of the main ones are Bihu which occurs three times a year: one for cropping season, one for harvest, and one for autumn. There are also religious festivals; Vaishnavites,  to celebrate prominent Vaishnava saints; Ambubachi; Diwali; Durga Puja; and more.

Transportation

Assam has a total of 23,000 miles of roads.  The railways in Assam cover about 1,400 miles. Airports in Assam are Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport, Mohanbari, Rawriah, Silonibari, Salonibari, and Kumbhirgram.
