The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located in the south-eastern area of the Bay of Bengal. The Islands have a total population of 356,152 people, and an area of about 2,508 square miles. The capital of this territory is Port Blair.

Geography

There are 572 islands in the territory, of which only approximately 38 are permanently inhabited. The islands are exposed to a warm, humid, tropical weather. The Islands have a rough landscape with hills, valleys, and forests.

Economy

The main industries in Andaman and Nicobar Islands are Tourism and Fishery. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been renowned as an eco-friendly tourist area. There are large amounts of tourist sites like beach resorts, scuba diving, and adventure tourism. Sites to visit are the Cellular Jail, Ross Island, Gandhi Park, Marine Museum, and Havelock Island.

Agriculture

Paddy, the main food crop, is mostly cultivated in Andaman group of islands, whereas coconut and areca nut are grown in the Nicobar group of islands. Field crops such as, pulses, oilseeds and vegetables are grown during Rabi season. Different kinds of fruits such as mango, sapota, orange, banana, papaya, pineapple and root crops are grown by farmers on the hilly lands. Spices, viz., pepper, clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon, rubber, red oil, palm and cashew are grown on the islands too. There are many small scaled industries in this territory, such as, shell and wood crafting, food processing, furniture making, ect.
