Cement allows countries all over the world to improve housing, transportation, industry, and general modernization. The cement industry in India began in 1914 with the Indian Cement Company Ltd. manufacturing cement at Porbundar in Gujarat. Soon the demand for cement overwhelmed production, leading to governmental control of cement price and distribution. More recently, India’s cement statutes have been loosened and reformed, allowing the industry to grow in terms of both production and technology.
As a result, the cement industry in India, the second largest manufacturer of cement in the world, is constantly making advancements in development and technology. In fact, the Indian cement industry uses some of the best technology in the world, as well as some of the best limestone – which is found throughout the country – to produce cement.
Within the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Department of industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) oversees development of cement industries in India, and has established the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB). The NCB works with the industry to upgrade technology in the areas of mining, processing, packaging and transportation. Modern techniques, including photogrammetry and remote sensing have led to discoveries of virgin limestone, and technology has helped to increase production, with the use of hydraulic excavators, surface miners, and mobile crushers.
The Development Council for Cement Industry, which was established under the 1951 Industries (Development & Regulation) act, looks to further encourage and promote the development of the cement industry in India through funding projects related to increasing productivity via cost reduction, optimizing the utility of raw materials, standardization of methods and quality controls, environmental improvement, and modernization, among others
