India’s biotech industry is emerging as a dominant competitor and, with its available resources, is improving both health and prosperity in the developing world.
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), established in India in 1986, has facilitated the combining of skilled manpower with knowledge to assist in the growth of the sector. This has allowed drugs to be innovated to aid the production of insulin, blood clotting, and vaccines. The biotech sector is expected to grow to around Rs 4,40,000 crores by 2020. In bio-agriculture, India has recently surpassed China as the largest producer of bt-cotton. These areas of growth have brought many U.S. and other Western companies to seek partnerships with Indian firms.
